PETALING JAYA: Mercedes-Benz Malaysia (MBM) today unveiled the GLA, its smallest SUV and now in its second generation.

The H247 GLA is available in two variants: the GLA 200 and GLA 250 priced RM 244,199.82 and RM 285, 336.66 (OTR without insurance and without SST). Starting July 2021, SST would be re-imposed with the respective prices at RM252, 888 and RM295,888.

In the latest revision, the GLA is shaped more like a regular SUV than an elevated hatchback that it was in the first generation.

The GLA 200 comes in Progressive Line with 18-inch 5-twin-spoke light-alloy wheels while the GLA 250 is equipped with AMG Line bodystyling.

The AMG Line enhances the attractive, sporty presence of the vehicle with lowered and dynamically tuned suspension to intensify driving experience.

As in the case of the other Mercedes-Benz SUV models, the radiator grille features distinctive openings along with a single louvre and a central star, with LED High Performance headlamps.

Although shorter than its predecessor on the outside, the new GLA offers a more spacious interior.

The entry-level SUV offers more space as it's over 10cm taller than its predecessor. The higher seating position makes more headroom available on the front seats. Legroom in the rear is likewise more generous, although it is now one and a half centimetres shorter. The rear seat back rest can be can be split 40:20:40, with each section folding down individually. The height-adjustable load floor offers considerable variability.

The GLA also includes the intuitively operated MBUX infotainment system (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) with the latest generation of Mercedes me connect. Other safety and assistance systems include Blind Spot Assist with Exit Warning, and PRE-SAFE System.

The GLA 200 Progressive Line is powered by the 1.3-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine combined with the 7G-DCT automatic transmission. It develops 163hp and a maximum torque of 250Nm, allowing the vehicle to accelerate from 0-100 kph in 8.7 seconds.

Powering the Mercedes-Benz GLA 250  AMG Line (now front-wheel drive instead of 4-wheel drive as in predecessor)  is the 2.0-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with the 8G-DCT automatic transmission. It rates at 224hp and produces a peak torque of 350Nm, accelerating the car from 0-100 kph in only 6.9 seconds.

Active parking assist, autonomous emergency braking and parking package with reversing camera are standard on both variants.

Available only in the GLA 250, Blind Spot Assist is able to warn of vehicles, including bicycles, in the danger area. For the first time, when the vehicle is at a standstill it can signal to the driver with a visual warning in the exterior mirror before they climb out that a vehicle is driving past in the critical area.

“The GLA is the key entry point to the brand in the fast-growing compact SUV family. The model combines the better of two very successful segments: compact car and SUV. This enables us to offer a unique lifestyle proposition that is similar to the bigger GLB that we have recently introduced.” said Mercedes-Benz Malaysia vice-president (sales & marketing passenger cars) Michael Jopp.
