New name, more range: Audi rebrands its e-tron as Q8 with facelift

BERLIN: Audi is giving its large electric SUV not only fresh design and tech in both the hatchback and Sportback versions, but also a new name, the Q8 e-tron, the German manufacturer has announced.

Audi wants this rebranding to signify its plans to switch the bulk of its offering to electric power, rather than keep electric cars under a separate niche branding.

According to Audi, the Q8 e-tron is set to be significantly more expensive, starting in its home market of Germany at upwards of €74,400 (RM348,000). After pre-orders beginning in mid-November, deliveries are scheduled to begin in February 2023.

Both variants of the Q8 e-tron can be recognised by new details such as a redesigned grille, a two-dimensional Audi logo and lettering on the B-pillar.

But most important for everyday driving is the update to the battery: With a new control system, Audi has increased the usable capacity of the two 95 and 114 kWh battery packs.

Because the car's aerodynamics have also been improved, Audi says the range is increasing to 582km for the hatchback model and a maximum of 600km for the Sportback.

In addition, the Q8 e-tron, which competes with vehicles such as the Polestar 3, the Mercedes EQS SUV and the BMW iX, can now also be charged faster. With charging speeds of up to 170 kW, you can now charge from 10 to 80% in as little as 31 minutes, according to Audi.

And what about the previous Q8, which began its career as the sporty brother of the Q7 with combustion engines and plug-in hybrid? According to Audi, it will continue under its current name for the time being.
