Not for toddlers: The roofless racing tricycle from Morgan returns

BERLIN: Anyone who had a tricycle as a child knows that there’s nothing quite like riding on three wheels. But once you get past toddler age, it’s pretty much two or four wheels for all of us.

For those who miss the unique controls, low centre of gravity and strong feeling of torque that comes with three wheels, British manufacturer Morgan has built a racing trike for grown-up toddlers.

More than 110 years after the company’s first model and 10 years since its last trike, Morgan has unveiled the Super 3, the latest version of its lightweight racing tricycle.

Unlike most trikes for children, the Super 3 flips the triangle around for two wheels at the front and one at the rear.

Buyers can expect a two-seater made entirely of aluminium with the body of a fighter plane that looks like it’s had its wings clipped. Instead of a roof, there is just a simple tarpaulin. Drivers may want to dress appropriately and don goggles as the windscreen has been reduced to a small wind deflector.

The trike goes on sale in mid-2022 and prices in England are set to start at around £42,000 (RM237,000). For that you get a trike that makes you feel every bit of its maximum 150Nm of torque thrusting you into the back of your seat.

According to Morgan, the Super 3 is powered by a 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine from Ford with 118hp.

Although the engine is rather modest for a sports car, Morgan promises solid driving dynamics due to the low weight of 635kg and a clean manual gearbox from the Mazda MX-5.

And given how close this car keeps you to the ground and with little to no protection from wind and rain, the top speed of 209kph should also feel much faster.
