Numbers of EVs on German roads are rising again
By DPA | 30 August 2025
BERLIN: Purely electric cars now account for 3.7% of the total of registered cars in Germany, with the numbers slowly growing, according to the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA).
A year earlier, the total was 3.1%, according to the latest survey by the agency released on Friday, which ran until July 1 in each case.
The proportion of the battery electric vehicles is now significantly higher in monthly new registrations.
In July, 18.4% of newly registered cars were electric.
Of the more than 1.8 million purely electric cars on Germany's roads, more than 320,000 were built by Volkswagen.
Tesla follows in second place with more than 195,000 vehicles.
However, the US manufacturer led by Elon Musk has recently experienced major sales problems on the German market, which are likely to be related to Musk's political activities.
The tech billionaire has since withdrawn from US politics.
According to the KBA, a total of 49.5 million cars of all types were registered in Germany on July 1, 2025 - more than ever before.
A year earlier, the figure was 49.4 million.
The largest group is the compact class, which accounts for 11.2 million cars, while 6.89 million of the current 49.5 million cars are SUVs.
The total number of motor vehicles was 61.4 million, including lorries, buses, motorcycles and tractors.
