KUALA LUMPUR: In less than a month, more than 4,000 motorcyclists have been issued summonses for exhaust modifications.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador said police issued a total of 4,087 summonses for the offence during 15 operations this month.

"We seized 2,309 motorcycles during operations which were carried out between March 1 and 21," he told reporters at Bukit Aman here today.

He said a total of 59,727 motorcycles were inspected during the operations.

"We are aware that when we started the operations many criticised us, saying that while people were going through a tough time we were going out to collect money for the government, but this is simply not true.

"The sound that modified motorcycle exhausts emit is a nuisance and the modification serves no real function," he added.

He said investigations revealed some motorcyclists spent between RM200 and RM2,000 on these modifications, but it did not actually give their motorcycles extra performance.

"Based on our observations, these motorcyclists only modify the exhaust systems for cosmetic reasons.

"They think it makes their machine look more stylish and go faster at the same time," he said.

Abdul Hamid added that it was time for action against errant motorcyclists because they contribute to more than 70% of fatal accidents.
