Perak JPJ rakes in RM6mil for 'AMY' plate bids

IPOH: The Perak Road Transport Department (JPJ) has managed to collect RM6mil in bids for the AMY series of registration plates throughout the five-day bidding period.

Its director, Mohammad Yusoff Abustan, said the bids, which were open via the JPJeBID system beginning April 9, had exceeded that of the previous AMG plate series.

"If AMG plates were specific for Mercedes-Benz AMG fans, AMY exceeded the amount as almost all popular numbers were bid.

"The highest bid was RM400,000 for AMY 1 while AMY 2 to AMY 9 reached till RM80,000 for each plate, and currently, only 16 plates are left for popular numbers,” Bernama quoted him as saying at the launch of the 2023 Hari Raya Aidilfitri road safety campaign by the Perak road safety council and Perak JPJ at Mydin Mall Meru Raya here today.

It was launched by infrastructure, energy and public transport committee chairman Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin as chairman of the Perak road safety council.

He added that successful bids needed to be registered within 12 months of the offer letter issued by the JPJ, while the remaining unbid numbers would be open to the public at the minimum price set.

On the upcoming festive traffic, Mohammad Yusoff said a total of three million vehicles are expected to enter Perak during the Hari Raya Aidilfitri week.

The peak period for the upcoming Hari Raya would be from Friday (April 21) to Sunday (April 23), he said.

“In Perak, our department has identified several accident-prone hotspots such as the Menora Tunnel heading north and south, from Batu Gajah heading towards Siputih in Tronoh and Manjung town.

“To ensure a smooth and safer journey for all road users in Perak, we have assigned nearly 160 officers and personnel on duty during the peak days.”

On April 11, Plus Malaysia chief operating officer Datuk Zakaria Ahmad Zabidi said about two million vehicles would use its highway daily on April 20 to 21, 24 to 25, April 29 to May 1, and from May 4 to 7.

On request to have the Automatic Enforcement System (AES) camera at the Menora Tunnel, Mohammad Yusoff said they have yet to receive any updates on this matter.

“Having AES will certainly help reduce accidents at the tunnel."
