PIAA 220R: Safer night riding

I have always loved night riding.

The highways feel wider, the air cooler, and the traffic almost non-existent.

But as any Malaysian rider will admit, the darkness comes with its own dangers such as potholes hiding in the shadows, animals darting out of nowhere, and, if you’re headed up Genting Highlands, occasional thick fog that gives you zero visibility.

Hence, I’ve recently been testing the PIAA 220R auxiliary lights on the test bike for this review.

I wanted to experience if PIAA stands up to its reputation as a value for money product.

PIAA has been producing lights and bulbs for over 50 years, and its presence in Malaysia stretches
beyond two decades.

Ask any 4X4 or off-road enthusiast, chances are they’ve used or are still using PIAA lights on their machines.

In recent years, PIAA has been turning its focus toward motorcycles, bringing in tech from its motorsport R&D.

When it comes to beam delivery, the PIAA 220R specially designed for motorcycle gives you three selectable modes to suit different riding conditions.

There’s the white beam (6000K) for crisp and clear long-range visibility on highways, the yellow beam (2500K) that cuts through heavy rain and fog like those often found on Genting, and a white + yellow dual mode for truly unpredictable weather.

Both colours produce 2500 lumens each, offering strong real-world illumination without overwhelming oncoming road users.

The kit comes with a harness with controller, waterproof switch, plus both handlebar and mirror mounting brackets a blessing for bikes with crowded cockpits.

Its powder-coated aluminium housing inspires confidence: dustproof, waterproof, and vibration-resistant, ready for Malaysian road realities.

The first test was a late-night highway blast.

Flicking on the white beam instantly sharpened everything reflective signboards popped earlier, road edges became clearer, and I found myself riding smoother and quicker without even trying.

The Genting Highlands ride was the real test.

Halfway up, the fog sets in, I switched to yellow, and suddenly the road became visible including the guardrails, even the moisture on the asphalt.

The corners felt less like guessing games. In white + yellow mode, the beam spread was so complete that my stock headlights felt like a decorative lamp.

That’s when I realised auxiliary lights are not a cosmetic upgrade.

It an upgrade ensuring the safety of a rider.

The PIAA 220R delivered its promise as a reliable companion to any rider when visibility is at its worst.

It is competitively priced at RM890 with a two-year warranty, and conforming to local safety standards.

In Malaysia, it is distributed by TJM Products Sdn Bhd, with availability through nationwide dealers and online at www.tjm.com.my.
