PETALING JAYA: Highway users have been told not to abuse the emergency lanes or risked causing accidents, says PLUS Malaysia Bhd.

A PLUS spokesman said those heading to their homes to celebrate Hari Raya Haji and the school holidays to check the travel advisory issued by PLUS and Public Works Department (JKR) and plan their journey accordingly.

She said traffic on several stretches in the north and south was slow moving with no major incidents reported so far.

She added that traffic was slow along the Bukit Berapit area from Permatang Pauh to Perai, from Sungai Petani to Gurun and from Bandar Ainsdale to Seremban R&R.

Star Radio Group traffic presenter Navin Rishal@Navster said as at 4pm yesterday, traffic on the North-South Expressway (NSE) was slow.

“From what we have monitored, the big chunk of traffic jam started from the Sungai Buloh exit to Sungai Buaya, which covers some 22km.

“Traffic was really heavy from Behrang to Tapah, especially around the uphill stretch, causing delays due to lots of slow vehicles on the roads,” he said, adding that the stretch from Behrang to Tapah was heavy as well.

In the northern area, traffic slowed to a 15km-long crawl in Juru, he added. In the southern area, traffic from Putra Mahkota to Seremban and Bangi to Seremban was also slow moving. He noted that traffic heading towards the East Coast was heavily congested along the Karak Highway.

The jam began from MRR2 heading towards Batu Caves and Gombak until the entrance to the East Coast Expressway. He said traffic on the East Coast Expressway to Kuantan was smooth.

JKR has prepared several advisories via Twitter on the choice of different highways and federal roads to use over the weekend. They include the NSE, New Klang Valley Expressway, Karak Highway and all the federal trunk roads.
