KUALA LUMPUR: Over 4,000 summonses within two weeks have been issued by the police over customised number plates.
Federal Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department director Comm Datuk Mat Kasim Karim, in a statement today, said that a special operation had been launched, dubbed Op Khas (Nombor Pendaftaran), targeting number plate non-compliance.
"From Nov 1 to Nov 15, the police have issued 4,617 summonses for 'fancy' number plates, while an additional 1,145 summonses were issued for vehicles without number plates.
"Meanwhile, a total of 8,645 summonses have been issued for number plates that do not meet regulations," he said, adding that an additional 25,732 summonses were issued for other infractions.
In total, 40,139 summonses were issued related to the special operation in that time frame.
"We have also arrested 25 people in the same time frame, for various offences, including under the Dangerous Drugs Act and the Penal Code. A total of 68 vehicles have also been seized," he said.
Comm Kasim urged road users to make sure their vehicle number plates are made according to the designated specifications and that the police would take action against those who refuse to comply.
