STUTTGART: Porsche has opened the first of a planned chain of fast-charging stations for exclusive use by customers of the upmarket sports car brand.

The facility is located outside the town of Bingen on the Rhine river in central Germany just two minutes from the junction of the A60/A61 highways. It is the first of its kind worldwide.

The custom-designed building has modern sanitary facilities, as well as a large selection of soft drinks and snacks which are not however offered free of charge.

Even physical workouts can be done in front of a smart mirror to keep the driver fit for the journey ahead. Interactive Porsche content can also be enjoyed at the site.

The station offers six 300-kW DC fast-charging stations and four 22-kW AC charging points. An eco-friendly heat pump provides ambient heating and air-conditioning without the use of fossil fuels.

The fast-charging stations currently provide a maximum of 300 kW but are capable of being upgraded to deliver even higher charging speeds. By the start of next year, 400 kW per charging point should be possible, said Porsche.

One of the drawbacks of driving an electric car is the need to regularly recharge the batteries which generally takes much longer than refuelling with petrol or diesel at a service station pump.

A Porsche Taycan will usually need just over 20 minutes to replenish its battery from 10 to 80% using maximum power of 225 kW.

"With very high charging performance, a comfortable ambience, and convenient, central billing of charging costs, the new Porsche Charging Lounges are perfectly tailored to the requirements of Porsche drivers on long journeys," said a statement from the Stuttgart-based maker.

A Porsche ID is needed to access the charging stations and the lounge area and this must be linked to the car. If the number plate is stored in the Porsche ID, the entry barrier opens automatically thanks to number plate recognition.

Further Porsche Charging Lounges are planned for Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
