Porsche to source 'green' aluminium from Norwegian company
By CARSIFU | 15 July 2024
STUTTGART: Porsche has agreed to buy carbon-reduced primary aluminium and secondary aluminium with a high recycled content from Norwegian aluminium company Hydro.
The deal aims to contribute to Porsche’s goal of achieving a net carbon-neutral value chain for new vehicles by 2030.
The deal, first announced via a Letter of Intent last year, specifies that Porsche and its suppliers will use aluminium with an ecological footprint of less than 4 kg CO2 per kg. This aluminium will be produced using renewable energy, mainly hydro power, reducing its carbon footprint by about 75% compared to the global average.
By 2027/2028, Hydro is expected to supply aluminium with at least 75% recycled content.
Both companies are exploring areas in car manufacturing where higher recycled content can be used.
Aluminium is critical for electric cars, comprising around 30% of the Taycan’s total weight.
The lightweight metal is essential for enhancing vehicle efficiency and reducing emissions in Porsche’s production processes.
