Porsche uses moving parts for active aerodynamics in the 911 GT3 RS

BERLIN: To ensure that the most muscular version of its cult 911 sports car doesn't lose traction even in fast bends, Porsche is relying on sophisticated aerodynamics in the new GT3 RS.

A racetrack-friendly upgrade of the GT3 to an RS model, the two-seater 911 coupé will be available from the end of the year at prices starting at €219,517 (RM978,000) in its home market, according to the German manufacturer.

Buyers not only get a little more power than the GT3, but above all sophisticated aerodynamics that allow higher cornering speeds.

Moving aerodynamic elements at the front and the large rear wing, which protrudes over the roof of the car for the first time, triple the downforce compared to the basic model, so that the airstream weighs more than 400kg on the car at 200kph.

In addition, the luxury car maker has installed a central radiator under the front flap.

This comes at a cost to boot space, but creates room for the active aerodynamic elements in the front, is more effective and also provides visual differentiation with huge gills.

The powertrain is also changing somewhat compared to the GT3.

The output of the four-litre naturally aspirated six-cylinder engine is increased slightly from 510hp to 525hp. This helps reduce the 0-to-100kph sprint time from 3.6s to 3.2s.

For this level of power, you'll need to accept an even bigger carbon footprint (and forget the current climate and energy crises). Porsche puts average consumption at 13.4 litres and says CO2 emissions are a sizeable 305 g/km.

Although the spoilers can be flattened at the touch of a button on a long straight track, for example, to make downforce significantly lower, the greater air resistance is still noticeable at top speed.

While the 911 GT3 reaches just under 320kph, the acceleration needle in the 911 GT3 RS stops at 296 kph, according to Porsche.
