Proton brings 10,000 sMILEs Expedition to Sarawak

MIRI, Sarawak: Proton recently brought its nationwide 10,000 sMILEs Expedition to Sarawak, journeying from Miri to Kuching to demonstrate the real-world capabilities of the Proton Saga, X50 and S70.

Held in conjunction with Visit Malaysia 2026, Round 4 of the expedition took participants through the Pan Borneo Highway, intercity routes, rural roads and selected challenging terrains.

The Sarawak leg was officially flagged off at Proton JL Motors Piasau 3S, Miri, by Sarawak Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew.

Throughout the journey, the Proton Saga, X50 and S70 were driven across a diverse mix of road conditions, highlighting their suitability for long-distance travel, urban commuting and everyday mobility.

Participants experienced the benefits of the S70's i-GT 1.5L turbocharged engine, 7-speed Dual Clutch Transmission, ride comfort and intelligent driving assistance technologies.

The X50 showcased a range of smart mobility features including Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), connectivity functions, voice recognition technology and intelligent parking assistance.

Meanwhile, the Saga reinforced its reputation as a practical and dependable sedan.

In addition to the driving experience, the expedition incorporated a series of activities designed to celebrate Sarawak's unique culture, heritage and tourism attractions.

In Bintulu, participants visited Taman Tumbina, home to one of Sarawak's well-known crocodile conservation stories, while a Sarawak Laksa Hunt Challenge showcased how in-car connectivity and navigation features can support everyday exploration and lifestyle experiences.

A key cultural highlight was the visit to Rumah Panjang Gani in Pakan, where participants experienced traditional Iban hospitality and Gawai celebrations with members of the local community.

The convoy also crossed the Batang Lupar Bridge, one of Sarawak's important connectivity landmarks, before concluding its journey at the iconic Kuching Cat Statue.

East Malaysia remains a key market for Proton, supported by a strong and expanding network of sales and service centres across Sabah, Sarawak and Brunei.

For the first five months in 2026, Proton recorded sales of 12,916 units in East Malaysia.

The best-selling models were the Proton Saga and X50.

Overall, Proton holds an estimated 19% market share in East Malaysia.

"The Sarawak leg of the 10,000 sMILEs Expedition is about more than covering distance. It is about understanding our customers, experiencing the roads they travel every day and demonstrating how our vehicles perform in real-world conditions," said Proton deputy CEO Datuk Abdul Rashid Musa.
