Proton records 13,602 units sold in February, surge in S70 sales

KUALA LUMPUR: Proton continues to register higher sales with 13,602 units moved in February, bringing its total sales over the first two months of the year to 26,484.

According to the national carmaker, the combined sales is a 3% increase over sales in the same two-month period last year.

Meanwhile, total industry volume is estimated to have grown 13.8% year-to-date to 129,353 units amid an influx of new brands launching both traditional and electric vehicle (EV) models.

Proton's market share is forecast to be 20.5%, which retains its position as the second most popular car brand in the country.

"Proton has continued its positive trajectory in the second month of the year with sales underpinned by consistent domestic demand as well as increasing export growth.

"Therefore, our export markets will be an important area of growth in 2024 and we also have high expectations for the Proton S70 to dominate its segment as deliveries continue to ramp up in the coming months," said Proton Edar CEO Roslan Abdullah in a statement.

By vehicle model, Proton's S70, which was launched at end-November 2023, saw a 60.5% surge in sales to 2,314 units in February as production continues to increase.

Models that were sales leaders for their respective segments in February included the B-segment Persona and the  X90, which record sales of 1,859 and 374 units over the previous month respectively.

The X50 was in second in place for B-segment SUVs in February with 1,816 units while sales of the X70 increased 19.6% to 445 units.

As for exports, Proton said shipments surged 223% to 346 units in February as compared to January while year-to-date export growth stands at 50.5% with 453 units sold to overseas markets.
