SHAH ALAM: The Proton S70 sedan has built a strong following in 2026 following the launch of the updated model on Feb 11.
For October, the model achieved its second best performance of the year with 3,029 units, pushing year-to-date (YTD) sales to 23,448 units, an increase of 63.5% over the previous year.
The sales numbers do not include volume for the recently launched 2027 Proton S70 i-GT 1.5, which is available in Lite and Prime grades.
By itself, the new model achieved 2,338 units in October as buyers were attracted by the variant’s combination of size, comfort, fuel savings, and value.
As for the Proton Saga, it saw 7,352 units sold in October, powering YTD sales to 75,589 units and placing the model ahead of total sales from 2025 while retaining its position as the second best-selling vehicle in Malaysia this year.
Other segment leading Proton models are the Proton X50 B-segment SUV (sport utility vehicle) and Proton X90.
The X50 continues to lead all rivals with 1,925 units sold in October boosting its YTD figure to 22,088 units.
Proton deputy CEO Datuk Abdul Rashid Musa said, "While we continue to expand our range of xEV (electrified vehicles) offerings, demand for Proton ICE models continue to grow and as a result, we are the market leader for SUV sales and are also the leading brand for sedan sales."
Meanwhile, Proton's sales performance in October now puts the company tantalisingly close to achieving its first 200,000-unit sales year since 2002.
Year-to-date (YTD) sales for October closed at 182,510 units, a year-on-year increase of 40.5%.
Also, with an overall market share of 33.2%, Proton e.MAS is Malaysia’s fastest growing xEV brand.
The Proton e.MAS 5 remains as the xEV market volume leader with another 2,437 units sold in October bringing its YTD sales to 23,189 units.
The Proton e.MAS 7 PHEV (plug-in hybrid) added another 710 units to bring its YTD total to 6,962 units while 616 units of the Proton e.MAS 7 found new buyers in October to brings its YTD total to 5,579 units.
Overall, YTD sales for the Proton e.MAS range now stands at 35,730 units.
“Malaysia’s appetite for xEV vehicles continues to grow. The brand confidence we have managed to build, and industry leading number of dealerships has resulted in strong support from consumers eager to embrace an electrified lifestyle," said Pro-Net CEO Zhang Qiang.
Also, Proton has set a new high mark for export sales in October with 2,610 units (Proton and Geely models) rolling off production lines in Tanjung Malim and making their way to overseas markets.
As a result, total export sales now stand at 9,980 units.
“Export volume continues to increase thanks to demand from Proton’s own overseas partners as well as demand from Geely’s export markets. This leads to increased parts ordering volume for our vendors, resulting in better production utilisation as well as improved economies of scale," said Abdul Rashid.
"Even with the improved numbers, we are still at the beginning of revitalising our export sales, so expect the segment to grow its percentage contribution to group sales in the coming years,” he added.
