KUALA LUMPUR: Proton's vehicle sales in September came in at 12,230 units, which brought year-to-date sales to 116,832 units.

This represents an increase of 14.1% over the sales in the first nine months of 2022, putting the carmaker on track to surpassing 2022's total sales of 141,432 units.

However, the carmaker noted that its sales in September were 1,725 units below that of August, in line with the decline in total industry volume to below the 70,000-unit threshold.

In terms of market share, Proton said it has 20.5% of total vehicle sales in the country, which represents a increase of 0.7% from the previous year.

Proton Edar CEO Roslan Abdullah said the softer performance in September compared to August was owing to buyers adopting a wait-and-see approach in anticipation of the tabling of Budget 2024.

"The overall mood of the market however remains buoyant with new introductions continuing at a record pace," he said.

In September, the Persona was the second most popular B-segment sedan with 2,053 units sold, but remains the year-t0-date market leader with 18,614 units sold.

The X90, which is the carmaker's newest model, remains the sales leader in the D-segment SUV market with 3,435 units sold despite a minor delay in production in September due to a service update.

Meanwhile, the X50 recorded 2,210 sales in September, losing its place as the most popular SUV in the country but remaining the best-selling B-segment SUV.

The Exora remains the leader of the MPV segment with 3,517 sold so far this year.
