Proton vendors sign up with Geely suppliers for high-tech upskilling and competitiveness


SUBANG JAYA: Proton is taking another step in localising high-tech components for its upcoming models with the signing of agreements between its vendors and Chinese companies that are currently supplying products to Geely.

Four new joint-ventures and two technical agreements were signed to enhance Proton’s local supply chain and introduce new competencies to its vendors.

The agreements will also accelerate the localisation of components for future Proton offerings for both ICE and EV segments, while boosting local content value and facilitating the introduction of new technologies to the Malaysian automotive ecosystem.

Proton vendors will also get to improve their capabilities and raise their competitiveness on a regional and global level.

The joint-venture between Delloyd Technology Bhd and Imotion Automotive Technology (Suzhou) Co Ltd would enable Delloyd Technology to tap Imotion Automotive Technology's know-how in Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).

Imotion Automotive Technology is supplying its ADAS to OEMs in China such as Geely, Zeekr, Chery and Volvo.

The Chinese company will also accelerate the development and adoption of ADAS systems for the upcoming Proton AMA01 model.

For braking systems, an agreement was signed between PEPS JV (M) Sdn Bhd and Liuzhou Sanly Autoparts Co Ltd.

This will enhance overall product performance of both the AMA01 and X-Series brake systems as well as benefitting  from this synergy, gaining advantages in raw material sourcing and component efficiency.

For vehicle headlamps, JHM Consolidation Bhd signed an agreement with Jiangsu Dekai Auto Parts Co Ltd has a proven record of accomplishment in the automotive lighting industry with strong R&D, engineering and advanced manufacturing facilities.

Meanwhile, a long-term Proton vendor Trillion Speed, signed up with HVAC specialist Shanghai Yinlun which has shown commitment to knowledge transfer and creation of new job opportunities in Malaysia.

On the first technical agreement, SHJ Interia Sdn Bhd signed up with Changchun Fawsn Automotive Trim Co Ltd who will develop and transfer new manufacturing technologies for interior components, particularly headlining.

The agreement includes guidance for establishing SHJ’s own R&D facility while enabling Changchun Fawsn to explore investment opportunities in Malaysia through its partnership with SHJ Interia.

The second technical agreement was between Xenso Electronics Sdn Bhd and Freetech Intelligent Systems Co Ltd who will co-develop ADAS of high-accuracy rear and side detection systems that crucial for features such as blind spot monitoring and lane change assist.

Proton chief procurement officer Wang Huaibing said high technology components are becoming an increasingly vital component in Proton models.

"It is vital for Proton to bring the development and production of these components to the local ecosystem, to gain a cost advantage as well as to upskill the capabilities of its R&D team and vendors.

"The joint-ventures and technical agreements reflect our long-term commitment to manufacturing vehicles in Malaysia while also turning the country into an automotive hub by contributing to the realisation of the Automotive High Tech Valley (AHTV)," he said.
