KUALA LUMPUR: Proton recently brought together customers, government stakeholders and its own management last week to celebrate Malaysia Day with a special screening of Astro Shaw's newest film, "Terbang".
The company was heavily involved in the production of the film, offering support through the use of its rally cars that were used on-screen during the movie.
"Terbang" tells the story of Ajeet, a talented rally racer who is haunted by trauma from a horrific accident that drives him to isolate himself from the world of motorsports.
With the support of his friends, he works to overcome his fears and obstacles and returns to the track to pursue his dream of bringing glory to Malaysia.
The film draws its inspiration from the career of Malaysian rally racer Karamjit Singh, 2002 FIA Production World Rally Champion, four time FIA Asia-Pacific Rally Champion and 11-time Malaysian National Rally Champion, and the success he achieved while being a member of Proton’s factory backed rally team.
Proton had provided a unit of its historic PERT rally car, along with its test track and garage facilities, to support the shooting of key scenes in the film.
Proton e.MAS was also the official mobility partner for the Terbang X Sting EV Road trip, a promotional campaign celebrating the film's release.
While Proton doesn’t currently compete in motorsports, the company has a long and chequered history of competing and winning in local, regional and global events.
Proton CEO Dr Li Chunrong said the movie represents a proud moment in the company's motorsport heritage while sharing its history with a younger generation.
"For Proton, this movie is a tribute to a golden era of Malaysian motorsport built by our engineers, mechanics and drivers. Cars like the Proton Wira 4WD and the PERT team carried our name on to the world stage during Karamjit Singh's championship-winning years," he said.
"This film shares that spirit of grit, teamwork and national pride with a new generation. We are honoured to have collaborated on this project and happy to see our brand and history portrayed alongside the achievements of one of our country's greatest motorsports heroes," he added.
