PETALING JAYA: Motorists in Selangor will be forced to familiarise themselves with cashless payment for street parking effective Jan 1,2022, as payment will only be done through "Smart Selangor Parking" mobile app.

Street parking fee using coin machines or scratch and display coupons will end on Dec 31,2021.

Selangor local government, public transport and new village development committee chairman Ng Sze Han said the cashless transaction offers motorists convenience.

“The Smart Selangor Parking mobile app introduced through Selangor government’s business arm Selangor Smart Delivery Unit (SSDU) in 2018 has seen a gradual acceptance among motorists.

“In 2018, there were 300,000 users while the following year it increased to 800,000 users. As of March this year, we have 1.5 million users who pay for the parking via their smartphones, ” he added.

Currently, 10 local councils in Selangor use the app except for Sabak Bernam and Hulu Selangor.

“The coupon method will still be in use and we are giving people until the end of 2021 to use up their scratch and display cards. More motorists have embraced the Smart Selangor Parking app as it is easier to use and this has saved 634,994kg of paper needed to print coupons, ” he said.

Ng added that the state government had also taken into account those without smart phones or the parking app, where parking agents will help out.

“SSDU would have parking agents, who would help out senior citizens or people from out of the state, to execute the cashless payment on behalf using a mobile phone, ” he said.

He added that technology was much needed to manage on-street parking so that motorists will no longer have to face the hassle of searching for a parking machine or where to buy scratch and display coupons.

He said using the new method, motorists will no longer have to search for a parking meter or where to buy scratch and display coupons.

On the difficulty of getting a parking bay at some commercial areas in Selangor, Ng added that Selangor had studied a mechanism where parking lots termed as hot zones were “time controlled”.

“Ordinary parking lot would cost 50 sen an hour but in a hot zone the parking lot will be 50 sen for each half hour. Other than the increased charge, a person will be allowed a maximum two hours of parking at the hot zone.

“Our aim is to allow others to use the parking lot. As for an area classified as a hot zone, it will be left to the respective local council to identify and proposed it to the state government for the area to be gazzetted, ” he said.

Shah Alam City Council mayor Datuk Haris Kasim said the people of Shah Alam were supportive of the cashless parking payment method.

“The people are starting to embrace smart parking apps, especially among women who find it safer to pay their parking fee from their cars or even while in the office if there was a need to add on payment due to a late meeting.

“On the hot zones, we are looking at the commercial areas of Kota Kemuning, Sungai Buloh and Glenmarie U1. All this will be done in consultation with the stakeholders, ” he said.

Ampang Jaya Municipal Council president Mohd Fauzi Mohd Yatim said one benefit of paying via a parking app is that one is able to monitor the time remotely, and can extend the time when needed.
