FRANKFURT: Skoda has pulled the drapes off an entirely new, entirely electric car, the Enyaq, set to hit the road in 2021 with an ample range of up to 510km from one battery charge.

The 4.65-metre-long off-roader is the first battery-powered car to be developed by the Czech subsidiary of VW and comes packed with Skoda's trademark practical features.

First there's the integrated ice scraper, then an umbrella that lives in the door and even features designed for an electric car, such as a special cleaner for the charging cable.

Technically closely related to VW's ID3 and ID4, the car will be available in numerous configurations, according to Skoda.

Three battery packs of 55 to 82 kWh are planned for standard ranges between 340km and 510km. The engine mounted on the rear axle will also be available in three variants with 109, 132 or 150 kW.

Pay an extra fee and you can get some versions of the car with a second 75 kW motor at the front so you can bolt around in four-wheel drive.

The Enyaq's top speed is set at 160kph, while the RS top model is afforded enough power to hit 180 kph.

Like other Skoda models, the Enyag is particularly spacious, the Czechs say, and the integration of the batteries in the car floor and the motors close to the axles leaves more room for passengers.

Despite being about 4 cm shorter than an Octavia, the Enyaq offers about 5 cm more leg room at a wheelbase of 2.75 metres. The boot holds at least 585 litres, not counting the nearly 50 liters of storage space in the interior. Prices in Europe start at 33,800 euros.
