Speed limit on federal and state roads reduced for CNY

SEPANG: The speed limit on federal and state roads nationwide will be temporarily reduced by 10kph in conjunction with the Chinese New Year celebrations, says the Works Ministry.
Its minister, Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi, said this would make the speed limit 80kph on federal roads and 70kph on state roads.
“The speed limit reduction will be enforced from Jan 18 until Jan 27.
“There will also be temporary changes to the current speed limit signs to reflect this reduction,” he told a press conference after jointly launching the road safety campaign for Chinese New Year with Transport Minister Anthony Loke at the Dengkil Northbound rest stop here today.
Nanta said the ministry had also carried out repairs on 53 accident hotspots along federal roads throughout last year, with a total cost of RM17.2mil.
“Streetlights have also been installed at 40 accident hotspots on federal roads last year, with (more to be installed) this year,” he added.
Meanwhile, Loke said as many as 2,000 Road Transport Department (JPJ) personnel would be on duty during the Chinese New Year period.
“Among the initiatives taken (by JPJ) are discreetly riding express buses to ensure the operators abide by the law.
“It is a preventive measure (rather than) issuing compounds ... and to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy.

“We want to educate, advocate and prevent mishaps,” he said.
He added that JPJ had also inspected buses at 77 depots and 28 terminals from Jan 14 until Tuesday to ensure the vehicles were in optimal condition.
Chinese New Year falls on Jan 22.
