SPM student among suspects nabbed over fake driving licences

KUALA LUMPUR: A student due to take his SPM this year is among two suspects arrested for allegedly selling fake driving licences online.

City Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) chief Asst Comm Mahidisham Ishak said in a statement today the arrests resulted from a complaint by a 40-year-old victim who claimed to have been scammed through an online advertisement.

"On March 29, the victim clicked on a Facebook ad that offered driving licences without the need for going through the Road Transport Department.

"After contacting the seller via Whatsapp, the victim was promised that a license could be purchased for RM490.

"However, despite paying, additional payments were requested for various reasons. A police report was made after the victim became suspicious," he said.

Following the report, a raid was conducted on Saturday at a house in Durian Tunggal, Melaka.

"Two arrests were made, with the suspects aged 17 and 22. Equipment believed to have been used to make fake licences was also seized," he added.

Investigations showed that the suspects were members of a group that had been active since 2016.

Both suspects have been remanded until April 5, and the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
