Tesla Cybertruck set for first deliveries, four years after unveiling

WASHINGTON: The first of Tesla's long-awaited Cybertrucks are due to be delivered to customers from Nov 30, the maker has announced, four years after the electric pick-up was unveiled.

Production of the futuristic Cybertruck started back in July, but it was in a pilot phase for several months. Deliveries were actually due to start in September, as Tesla announced in April.

According to the US motoring magazine Car & Driver, Tesla's Cybertruck is set to challenge top-selling pick-up trucks, one the most popular body styles in North America.

Three versions are said to be on the cards, with a single-motor rear-wheel drive model serving as the entry point and a much more powerful triple-motor version with all-wheel drive sitting at the top of the range.

There are still over one million reservations for the Cybertruck, according to Elon Musk in the company's quarterly report.

If all of these were to translate into orders, Tesla would be busy for years on end. This is because the production capacity was stated as "125,000" annually.

A lot of question marks remain such as how much the vehicle, first demo-ed at a November 2019 event, will cost. Musk as said the Cybertruck is extremely difficult to produce, owing to the high costs involved. Car & Driver expects the Cybertruck to retail from US$70,000 (RM328,000).

"I just want to temper expectations about the Cybertruck," Musk said recently. "It's a great product, but financially it will take a year to 18 months for it to make a significant, positive cash flow contribution."

Exactly how many Cybertrucks will be delivered on Nov 30 and whether there will be a "delivery event" like with the Tesla Semi and Model Y remains to be seen.

Tesla recently published a photo showing several Cybertrucks on the trailer of a Tesla articulated lorry.
