KUALA LUMPUR: Did you know that the colours black, grey and white are still the most popular choices for new car owners in Southeast Asia?

Such findings were discovered by AkzoNobel - one of the leading automotive paints and coatings companies, in a recent survey.

The results showed that 22% of respondents choose black as their favourite colour, with 21% and 19% of respondents choosing white and grey respectively.

To understand the rationale behind these choices, let us dive deeper into the colours and what they represent.

The colour black often represents power, ambition and wealth.

This is evident as some of the more luxurious automotive brands such as BMW and McLaren use the colour black in their branding.

Speaking of these brands, BMW and McLaren use AkzoNobel automotive coatings for their vehicles.

BMW uses them on some of their products and car parts, whereas McLaren uses AkzoNobel's automotive paint for all production road cars.

Some other car brands, such as Proton for instance, also often capitalise on the popularity of this colour by recently launching a Special Edition Proton Saga clad in black.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, the colour white that is often associated with purity and cleanliness.

On a more practical level, white surfaces are great heat and light reflectors.

This means white cars don’t absorb as much heat from sunlight and the interior of your vehicle won't heat up as quickly when out in the open during a sunny day.

Additionally, white vehicles often have higher resale values - especially so when it's in optimum working condition and with lower mileage.

For the colour grey, which is often seen as diplomatic and strikes a balance between black and white, their vehicle owners tend to be modest and humble individuals who are often happy to
blend into the crowd.

The colour is simple and easy to maintain although it does tend to dull over time and scratches are not as perceptible when compared to other colours.

For colours to stand the test of time, Sikkens - a 200-year-old brand under AkzoNobel, undertook years of research to attain that shiny white, elegant black and stoic grey colours.

Sikkens also specialises in vehicle refinish systems that aim to protect your vehicle to OEM standards and happens to be one of the world's leading coating brands for collision repairers and commercial finishers.
