This is the production series VW ID.6 that seats 7

PETALING JAYA: While Volkswagen is busy plugging its ID.4 electric SUV now, the media interest has already shifted to its 7-seater ID.6.

As the name implies, the ID.6 is a much bigger SUV than the ID.4. It's almost 30cm longer and the bigger space allows for three rows of seats for seven people as opposed to only two in the ID.4 for five.

First seen as the ID.Roomzz concept, it has morphed into the production series ID.6 you see here. Thanks to Automotive News China, this unofficial image was made public as it was spotted on a website operated by China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

It's being produced in China for the Chinese and will start showing up in showrooms later this year. One VW official had previously said it would also sell in the United States. If so, it would make sense for Volkswagen to build it at its US plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee, which is being overhauled to cater for EV production based on the MEB platform.

The ID.6's overall design looks appealing and you can see the conventional headlights and ID facial identity it shares in common with the ID.3 and ID.4 from the shape of the headlights to the grille. Curved sheet metal wrapped along the sides and a thick black plastic cladding at the base plays tricks on the eye, making the electric crossover appear lower than it really is.

The Chinese website said the ID.6 to be sold locally would have 201hp, coming from a rear motor as seen also in the ID.3 and ID.4. Range has been reported as 700km. VW would not pass up the chance to offer a more expensive variant with a second motor upfront with combined output of 302hp. The ID.4 has a dual motor option as well for all-wheel drive capability.
