Toyota foundation reveals six finalists in the running to improve KL

KUALA LUMPUR: The Toyota Mobility Foundation has announced six solution ideas as finalists for the City Architecture for Tomorrow Challenge (CATCH) programme.

The foundation launched CATCH in February 2020 with a global call for "dynamic, intelligent and data-driven solutions to address mobility and city planning challenges" in Kuala Lumpur. It is working with Kuala Lumpur City Hall, the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation and data partners – Prasarana, MapIT, and Grab – to support the finalists.

The finalists are: KERB (Malaysia/Australia); Geospock (UK); Hayden AI Technologies (USA); Liftango (Australia); Numina (USA); and RUNWITHIT Synthetics (Canada).

The winner would be announced in April-May 2021.

Despite the continuing impact of Covid-19, the CATCH programme progressed through the application stage in May, receiving over 90 entries from over 20 countries. The entries were cut down to 16 semi-finalists and then to six at the finalist stage.

A panel of eight judges from government, sustainable mobility, venture capital, technology, and industry virtually assessed the contestants.

The six teams would be required to further develop their Minimum Viable Product, and at this stage each would receive a grant of US$125,000 (RM505,000) to enable them to test and carry out intelligent data-driven, connected solutions, aimed at a more efficient, innovative, secure and sustainable city.

Part of the Toyota group, the foundation was set up in August 2014 to support the development of a more mobile society.
