Toyota Land Cruiser FJ: 2.7L petrol, 6-speed auto, 163PS/246Nm

TOKYO: The new Toyota Land Cruiser FJ made its world premiere recently, and its launch in Japan is due in mid-2026.

It is powered by a 2.7-litre petrol engine, which is mated to a 6-speed Super ECT automatic transmission, producing 163PS and 246Nm of torque.

It comes with a 4WD (part-time four-wheel drive system) and Toyota says the new Land Cruiser FJ retains the reliability, durability, and off-road performance that support people's lifestyles.

Until now, the Land Cruiser line-up has consisted of three distinct series: the station wagon flagship model (currently the 300 Series); the heavy-duty model as a workhorse (the 70 Series); and the core model that was created in 2024 as a return to the car's origins ― a simple, sturdy vehicle (the 250 Series).

With the addition of the new Land Cruiser FJ, Toyota says this will provide new value in the form of "Freedom and Joy" that come from enjoying the Land Cruiser.

The Land Cruiser FJ has interior and exterior styling that fuses traditional and modern elements in a functional package.

The exterior design follows a silhouette that emphasises a square cabin, taking into consideration the habitability and cargo capacity that successive generations of Land Cruisers have prioritised.

Both front and rear corner bumpers are removable, segmented types, allowing only damaged parts to be replaced to improve repairability, while also taking customisability into account.

The cockpit layout features a horizontal instrument panel, a monitor and switches that consolidate functions to minimise eye movement, and a shift knob that allows natural operation.

There is good forward visibility through a low-set cowl and instrument panel, contributing to safe on- and off-road driving.

A low beltline improves visibility even on rough roads.

It comes with Toyota Safety Sense, an active safety package with advanced functions including Pre-collision.

The Land Cruiser FJ offers off-road performance worthy of a Land Cruiser through wheel articulation (the ability of a tyre to stay on the ground) that is equivalent to the 70 Series.

A shorter wheelbase (270mm shorter than the 250 Series) ensures excellent maneuverability with a minimum turning radius of 5.5 metres and mobility on off-road terrain.

Customisation options will include round headlights reminiscent of previous generations of Land Cruisers, and MOLLE panels for attaching outdoor equipment that can provide cargo space.

Toyota is also developing the Land Hopper, an electric personal mobility vehicle designed to carry people and cargo.

The Land Hopper will offer off-road riding on trails (primarily unpaved paths in mountains and forests), going beyond where the Land Cruiser can take people.
