SHAH ALAM: Aligning with Toyota’s Multipathway strategy to offer a range of mobility solutions, UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd's (UMWT) ever-popular B-segment sedan is now available in hybrid powertrain.
The Vios now comes in a Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) powertrain option that combines a 1.5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor generator and a compact lithium-ion battery.
Said Hybrid Electric System (HES) produces a combined output of 111PS and 141Nm of torque with a combined NEDC fuel consumption of 3.6L/100km.
Experience-wise the self-charging hybrid system is said to enable low-speed electric driving in traffic and uses regenerative braking to automatically recharge the battery, delivering quieter operation, improved efficiency, and lower emissions — particularly in urban driving conditions.
According to Toyota the HES gives the Vios a smooth and immediate response from standstill as the system seamlessly switches between the engine and motor for an intuitive acceleration.
The announcement of the Vios HEV also marks the brand's localisation of its hybrid battery assembly at their Bukit Raja manufacturing facility.
Supporting the model's entry, the facility is capable of producing up to 30,000 battery units annually.
The facility assembles 97% of battery components locally which in turn reduces secondary CO₂ emissions associated with import logistics while improving production flexibility to meet growing demand for hybrid vehicles.
The high-precision assembly line features intelligent foolproof systems, automated inspection processes, sound-checker functions, battery performance testing, and full traceability throughout production. This is to ensure that every battery meets Toyota’s global standards for Quality, Durability, and Reliability (QDR).
Beyond manufacturing capability, the initiative creates high-value employment opportunities, equips local talent with advanced electrification skills, and reinforces Malaysia’s position within the regional automotive value chain.

By building key electrification capabilities locally, we are supporting national sustainability goals, strengthening local industry, and ensuring more Malaysians can benefit from reliable, high-quality hybrid mobility," he added.
Available in either standard or with GR Sport kit, the cabin of the sedan sees hybrid-exclusive finishes, ambient lighting, a 10.1-inch display audio system and 7-inch hybrid-specific multi-information display that allows drivers to monitor energy flow, battery charge, and EV mode status.
The GR Sport option as the the name implies features Gazoo Racing-inspired enhancement liveries.
This includes GR-specific aerodynamics, black accents, and distinctive badging are paired with GR-tuned suspension and electric power steering for sharper handling and improved stability at higher speeds without compromising everyday comfort.
Inside are GR-exclusive elements include leather suede seats, contrast stitching, GR floor mats, a GR-branded steering wheel, and soft-touch interior accents.
The model has also achieved the maximum 5-star ASEAN NCAP safety rating through its Toyota Safety Sense, Pre-Collision System, Lane Keep Control, Adaptive Cruise Control, Blind Spot Monitor, Auto High Beam, and a 3D Panoramic View Monitor.
Exterior colour options include Platinum White Pearl, Attitude Black Mica, Silver Metallic, Celestite Grey Metallic, and Scarlet - the GR Sport offers distinctive two-tone colour schemes with a black roof.
The standard Vios HEV is priced from RM103,900, while the Vios HEV GR Sport starts from RM109,900 for Peninsular Malaysia.
Both variants come with a 5-year unlimited mileage vehicle warranty, along with an 8-year unlimited mileage hybrid warranty covering the battery, inverter, and power management unit. Customers may also opt to extend the hybrid warranty.
