Traffic offenders owe RM6.5bil in unpaid summonses, says Bukit Aman

KUALA LUMPUR: Some 43.5 million traffic summonses worth a whopping RM6.5bil remain unpaid nationwide, says Bukit Aman.

This is out of a total of 135.9 million summonses totalling RM20.3bil issued for traffic offences from 1990 to date, said Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department director Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri.

"The majority of summonses have been settled while 43.5 million remain unpaid as of Wednesday (Nov 6)," he told reporters today after visiting the department's city headquarters.

A five-day 50% discount campaign on traffic summonses is being offered in Kuala Lumpur until Nov 9.

Comm Yusri said 17,002 summonses worth RM1.86mil have been settled in the first two days of the discount campaign.

So far this year, 4.3 million traffic summonses have been issued nationwide worth RM646.1mil, Comm Yusri said.

"Most of the offences are for obstructing traffic and disregarding traffic signs," he added, noting that 881,211 summonses were issued in the city alone.

"It is quite high given the number of enforcement operations conducted throughout the year," he said.
