Two-hour parking limit rule to start in Kajang from June 1

KAJANG: The Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj) will implement a two-hour parking limit in 12 areas.

The initiative will start at Jalan Tun Abdul Aziz, a commercial area in the town, on June 1 involving 19 parking bays.

MPKj president Najmuddin Jemain said parking bays there would be painted with orange lines to alert motorists about the two-hour limit.

For Jalan Tun Abdul Aziz, 10 of the bays will be in front of Kedai Buku Czip Lee while nine will be in front of New Zealand Cakehouse.

Under phase two, the system will be implemented in 11 other areas with a total of 133 parking bays set aside.

The areas are Jalan Raja Haroun, Jalan Sulaiman, Jalan Besar, Jalan MKH Avenue 1, Jalan Dato’ Ungku Shamsudin, Jalan Jelok 3, Jalan Jelok 6, Jalan Jelok 8, Jalan S10/1, Jalan Tukang and Jalan Mendaling.

Najmuddin said there would be a two-week trial period for motorists to familiarise themselves with the new scheme before enforcement was carried out.

“MPKj has identified 152 on-street parking bays for this scheme,” he said at the council’s full board meeting.

Najmuddin saidd the criteria used in identifying spots for the two-hour limit was the “high occupancy rate” in these areas.

“The proposed parking fee is 50 sen for the first half hour, with a maximum time limit of two hours.

“There will be a cooling-off period of an hour before motorists are allowed to repark at these bays.

“No extension of time is allowed and motorists must remove their vehicles after the two hours,” he said.

Bays under the scheme will be monitored from 8am to 6.30pm daily except on Saturday, Sunday and public holidays.

Najmuddin said vehicles exceeding the time limit would be towed.

“Existing parking spots for the disabled are excluded from the two-hour limit.

“It will also not affect owners of shophouses or premises renting parking bays on a yearly basis,” he assured.

Motorists can use Smart Selangor Parking, Flexi Parking and JomParking apps or Touch ‘n Go ewallet to pay for parking, he added.

MPKj is the latest local authority to introduce a two-hour parking limit.

The Selangor government has issued a directive for local councils to implement the two-hour parking system (or hot zone parking) in certain sections of busy commercial areas aimed at improving parking space usage.

Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ) was the first to implement the ruling with Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) and Ampang and Klang municipal councils following suit.
