UMW Toyota Motor plugs eco-friendly cars at 'Beyond Zero' event

KUALA LUMPUR: UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd (UMW Toyota) today unveiled its "Beyond Zero" initiative.

The event, which is taking place from today until Feb 28 at Technology Park Malaysia, Bukit Jalil here, presents measures that aim to highlight the carmaker's move towards sustainable and eco-friendly practices.

It is being held to underscore Toyota's global pursuit of carbon neutrality by 2050.

"Malaysia, being recognised as the best country in Southeast Asia in the Energy Transition Index 2023 by the World Economic Forum, is on the right track to becoming a regional leader in energy transition," said Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz.

"Toyota's innovative efforts in clean energy, through its diverse approach, align seamlessly with our national goals,” he said in a statement today.

TOYOTA ZERO CARBON


UMW Toyota president Datuk K. Ravindran said is well positioned in Malaysia, which is known as a major electrical and electronics manufacturing hub in South-East Asia.

The Beyond Zero event was launched to showcase Toyota's diverse approach to various electrified technologies, including hybrid EVs (HEVs), battery EVs (BEVs) and fuel cell EVs.

These electrified vehicles showcase the latest in automotive sustainability, featuring advanced technologies and design elements aimed at reducing environmental impact.

UMW Toyota has sold 41,600 HEVs since 2009, which translates into decarbonisation effects of 150,000 tons of carbon dioxide absorption equivalent to 500,000 trees.

In addition to HEVs, UMW Toyota presented BEVs and fuel cell EVs, including showcasing its bZ4X, Hilux BEV and the C+pod, touted as an eco-friendly two-seater ultra-compact BEV.

As for the fuel cell EVs, the auto maker is showcasing advanced models like the Toyota Mirai FCEV, GranAce FCEV and Hilux FCEV.
