Vandal's car-scratching spree comes to an end as cops nab him

KOTA KINABALU: Over the past week, social media here has been abuzz with photos and complaints from car owners showing their vehicles that had been scratched and vandalised.

The destructive doodling came to an end after policemen nabbed a suspect on Monday (Aug 5).

Kota Kinabalu police chief Asst Comm Habibi Majinji said the jobless suspect was nabbed at about 10.30pm from a house in Kg Sri Pandan, Putatan near here.

“The man was arrested following a police report lodged by a victim on Sunday (Aug 4), ” he said.

He said the victim had found his car with multiple deep scratch marks at about 12.10am on Sunday.

“The losses were estimated to be at RM2, 000, ” ACP Habibi said on Thursday (Aug 8).

Initial investigations found that the suspect normally targets darker vehicles parked at the KKIA area, and uses a pair of scissors to scratch the vehicles.

“The suspect also told police he had done the same to several other vehicles in the area, ” ACP Habibi said.

The man tested negative for drugs.

“We are not sure why he does this. The motive is still under investigation, ” said ACP Habibi.

The suspect can be fined or jailed between one and five years, or both upon conviction.
