KUALA LUMPUR: Vehicle sales dipped in June to 50,275 units, which was lower from a year ago and in May due to the shorter working month, the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) said.
The trade body said on Monday the sales were 0.6% lower when compared with the 57,362 units in May. “Sales volume in June was 12% or 7,087 units lower than a year ago because of the shorter working month due to the Hari Raya festive holidays,” it said.
Of the 50,275 units sold in June, passenger vehicles accounted for 45,339 and the rest were commercial vehicles. Year-to-date, unit sales were at 284,461 units, up 3% from the 275,483 units in the previous corrsponding period.
As for the current month of July, the MAA expected sales to be maintained at the June level. It explained that one factor was the delay in the process of vehicles registrations due to uncertainties arising from the liberalisation of motor insurance from July 2017. The liberalisation of tariffs came into effect on July 1.
The MAA data also showed vehicle production declined 21.3% to 32,179 units in June compared with 40,928 units a year ago. Year-to-date, production fell 2.9% to 255,318 units from 262,963 units in the previous corresponding period.
