KUALA LUMPUR: The new Volkswagen Golf R performance hatch has arrived, and features the most powerful production Golf engine to date.
The recommended retail price for the Golf R starts from RM337,790.
With the inclusion of the Volkswagen Assurance Package (VAP), which includes five years free maintenance, five years mileage warranty and five years roadside assistance, the recommended retail price starts from RM355,990.
“The new Golf R represents the pinnacle of Volkswagen performance, bringing together everyday usability with exhilarating driving dynamics in one complete package," said Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia (VPCM) managing director Renate Noessler.
"With this launch, we are introducing the most advanced and powerful Golf R ever offered in Malaysia, delivering an even more engaging experience for motorsport enthusiasts while staying true to the versatility and practicality that define the Golf nameplate.”
Malaysia is the only country outside of Germany to locally assemble the Golf R, at the Volkswagen plant in Pekan.
At the heart of the new Golf R lies a significantly enhanced powertrain – a 2.0 TSI turbocharged engine with an output of up to 333PS, making it the most powerful production Golf currently in the market.
Paired to a seven-speed DSG transmission, this beast sprints from 0-100kph in just 4.6 seconds.
Enhanced torque (420Nm) sent to all four wheels using 4Motion increases stability and surgical precision while cornering.
The R Performance Torque Vectoring system variably distributes torque between the rear wheels for sharper turn-in and enhanced cornering dynamics for those who live to drift.
The new Golf R features multiple drive modes including Comfort, Sport, Race, Drift, and Individual.
It has sharper lines, with an illuminated Volkswagen logo on the front bumper.
Exclusive ‘R’ styling elements, including the R Performance titanium quad exhaust system from Akrapovič and aerodynamic accents make for a classic motorsport inspired look and a more emotive exhaust note.
The new Golf R rides on lightweight 19-inch ‘Estoril’ Alloy wheels.
IQ.LIGHT LED matrix headlights incorporate a new high-performance main beam.
Available colour options are the new Dolphin Grey, along with Lapiz Blue, Grenadilla Black, and Pure White.
An upgraded cabin features a new tablet-style 12.9-inch media infotainment system powered by the latest MIB4 operating system, and Digital Cockpit Pro featuring a 10-inch high-resolution dashboard display, as well as wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and wireless smartphone charging, and leather "Nappa" upholstery, with "R" logo on front seats.
Meanwhile, enhanced IDA voice assistant integration offers more natural voice control.
The new Golf R is fitted with a premium 480W Harman Kardon nine-speaker sound system with 12-channel amplifier and subwoofer.
An advanced IQ.DRIVE system provides a comprehensive suite of advanced driver assistance systems.
These include Park Distance Control with front and rear obstacle detection for easier manoeuvring, Proactive passenger protection system, Adaptive Cruise Control with stop-and-go functionality, Front Assist with Autonomous Emergency Braking, including pedestrian and cyclist monitoring as well as Lane Assist and Side Assist.
