PETALING JAYA: Volvo Car Malaysia has rolled out the country's first locally assembled electric vehicle (EV) in the form of the XC40 Recharge Pure Electric.
The sports utility vehicle is assembled at the Volvo plant in Shah Alam where the site will also be Volvo's hub for EV production for the Asean region.
The price of the all-electric XC40 will be announced on April 4 where the vehicle will be available for viewing at showrooms as well as ready for online purchase.
Customers can take delivery of their electric XC40 in late April.
Based on the conventional XC40, the electric XC40 comes with a distinctive closed-off front grille and does not have exhaust pipes.
Wheels are the 19-inch type.
The SUV's two electric motors, one each at the front and rear axles, deliver a combined output of 408hp with an all-wheel drive capability.
The electric XC40 can do the 0-100kph sprint in 4.9 seconds and has a top speed of 180kph.
Driving range is estimated at 418km on a single charge.
Charging for its high voltage lithium-ion battery is done through a CCS 2 connector.

The battery can be charged up from 0 to 100% using 11kW AC in around seven hours, while a 150kW DC will power up from 10% to 80% in 33 minutes.
Inside, the electric XC40 features a 12.1-inch digital instrument panel with an Android-powered infotainment system with 9-inch touchscreen.
The infotainment system also allows users to access Google Maps, Google Assistant and Google Play Store.
The electric XC40 comes with a warranty of five years with unlimited mileage, while the battery has an eight-year/160,000km warranty.
At the launch in Petaling Jaya on Tuesday, Volvo Car Malaysia managing director Charles Frump said the company is aiming to be the leading luxury EV brand in Malaysia.
“Volvo Car Malaysia is ready to implement Volvo’s global plan for a fully electric line-up by 2030, starting with the launch of the XC40 Recharge Pure Electric.
“The XC40 Recharge Pure Electric is just one of our many steps to encourage consumers to adopt electric vehicles for a more sustainable future.
“By mid-decade, we’re aiming to reduce our overall CO2 lifecycle emissions per car by 40%. This means more than simply reducing tailpipe emissions by electrification is not enough. We must reduce CO2 emissions across our operations and supply chain,” he said.
Frump also said Volvo Car Malaysia would be introducing a new electric vehicle model annually beginning this year.
The company, he said, is also aiming for 75% of its vehicles to be sold by 2025 to be EVs.
To date, Volvo is the only automotive maker in Malaysia with a full range of locally assembled (CKD) plug-in hybrids.
