Volvo ES90 makes world premiere

GOTHENBURG: Volvo has introduced the ES90, a fully electric vehicle that blends characteristics of a sedan, fastback, and SUV.

It has a raised ride height for enhanced visibility, a sloping roofline for improved aerodynamics, and a spacious interior. It is the first Volvo model equipped with 800-volt technology, offering faster charging and greater range.

The ES90 is built on Volvo’s SPA2 platform and integrates a dual Nvidia Drive AGX Orin computing system, significantly improving processing power.

Volvo claims this enhances safety and performance through continuous over-the-air updates. The vehicle is also part of the company’s transition to fully electric models, joining the EX90, EM90, EX40, EC40, and EX30.

“The Volvo ES90 combines our most advanced technologies with Scandinavian design and superior comfort, creating a true premium Volvo car designed to elevate your quality of life,” said Volvo CEO Jim Rowan.

“It joins the EX90 SUV as one of our flagship models and cements our position as an industry leader in software-defined cars that harness the power of core computing.”

Designed with Volvo’s signature safety technology, the ES90 includes a high-strength safety cage, advanced restraint systems, and optimised deformation zones. It is equipped with five radars, seven cameras, 12 ultrasonic sensors, and a lidar system from Luminar Technologies.

The driver monitoring system can detect if a driver is distracted, intervening when necessary. A door-opening alert helps prevent accidents with passing cyclists and pedestrians, while an occupant detection system can sense subtle movements, including a baby’s breathing.

The exterior features Volvo’s Thor’s Hammer headlight design, C-shaped LED rear lamps, and a rear window lighting sequence. Customers can choose from seven exterior colours and wheels ranging from 20 to 22 inches. The vehicle’s aerodynamic profile contributes to a drag coefficient of 0.25, the lowest in Volvo’s history, enhancing efficiency and range.

Inside, the ES90 offers premium materials, a long 3.1-metre wheelbase, and generous legroom for rear passengers. It includes six ambient lighting themes and multiple upholstery choices. A panoramic roof with optional electrochromic glass allows users to adjust transparency, while the four-zone climate system, certified as asthma and allergy friendly, filters out up to 95% of PM2.5 particles.

The ES90 provides an advanced in-car entertainment system, featuring a 14.5-inch centre display, a 9-inch driver display, and Google built-in services powered by the Snapdragon Cockpit Platform.

The top-tier Bowers & Wilkins audio system includes 25 speakers, Dolby Atmos spatial audio, and a mode replicating the acoustics of Abbey Road Studios.

The ES90’s 800V architecture enables charging speeds that can add 300 km of range in 10 minutes at 50 kW fast chargers. It offers a WLTP-rated driving range of up to 700 km. The vehicle is available for order in select European markets, with additional markets expected in 2026.
