VW ID.3 passes ADAC endurance test with flying colours

MUNICH: Europe's largest automobile association ADAC has given the Volkswagen ID.3 a positive review after conducting an endurance test on the vehicle.

The test involved driving the ID.3 for over 100,000km, and the key finding was that the high-voltage battery still had a net capacity of 93%.

This is significant because Volkswagen guarantees that the battery will retain at least 70% of its original net capacity after eight years or 160,000km of driving.

During the test, the ADAC testers also analysed the battery, often charging it to 100% at fast charging stations. They also kept the vehicle at a 100% charge level, contrary to the recommendation, sometimes for several days. Despite this, the battery performed well and retained a high capacity.

The endurance test was the first of its kind for a vehicle in the ID. family, and the ID.3 was repeatedly checked by engineers at the Landsberg am Lech Test and Technical Centre between test drives.

The ADAC examined eight main criteria and over 300 sub-criteria, including technology, safety, handling, ease of operation, and environmental impact.

The ADAC has recommended that customers always install software updates for the ID.3.

During the endurance test, the vehicle received several software updates, which not only fixed bugs but also increased charging power up to 170 kW. The updates also improved power consumption and range, particularly in short distances and winter temperatures.

The ADAC testers also praised the intelligent Electric Vehicle Route Planner, which was added to the ID.3 via an update.

This feature plans charging stops on longer routes to ensure the destination is reached as quickly as possible. It takes into account the battery's state of charge, current traffic conditions, and forecasts.

The charging stops are evaluated dynamically based on the performance of the charging stations, allowing for efficient and effective route planning.

Overall, the ADAC's report on the ID.3 is positive, highlighting the vehicle's battery performance, software updates, and intelligent route planning.
