BERLIN: Volkswagen is expanding its family of electrics with the newly unveiled ID.7, set to slot in at the upper end of the mid-range segment when it launches at the end of 2023.

The Passat-like electric measures just under 5 metres and will initially be available as a saloon with prices in its home market of Germany starting at €56,995 (RM290,000).

VW says the five-seater offers 532 litres of boot space, while those looking for more space will have to wait until next summer, when the ID.7 will becomes the first electric from Wolfsburg to be available as an estate, which will be called the Tourer instead of the Estate.

The rear electric motor delivers 286hp and the top speed is 180kph. If that's not enough, the German automotive giant also has an ID.7 GTX with all-wheel drive and two motors in the works.

According to VW, a battery with more capacity can also be installed due to the larger wheelbase. In addition to a 77 kWh battery at the start, there will therefore soon also be a version with 85 kWh.

This will increase the range from the current 621km to more than 700km. VW says it will also increase the charging capacity and raise the maximum charging power from 170kW to 200kW.
