MUNICH: Volkswagen's ID3, the Renault Mégane E-Tech and other cars in the growing range of family-friendly fully electrics are set to get significant competition in the form of a Chinese-built crossover

The traditional British brand MG, which was sold to China almost 20 years ago, is preparing to launch its first model planned from the outset as an electric vehicle on European markets.

Before the turn of the year, MG plans to launch its MG4, a hatchback built on a new architecture developed exclusively for battery cells, the Chinese SAIC Group behind the brand has announced. Beyond Asia and Europe, further markets are set to be targeted in 2023.

With its high roof, sleek shape, striking rear spoiler and a length of just under 4.30 metres, the MG4 is also built to compete with the likes of VW and Renault's electric runabouts in terms of range.

Designed on a new electric platform, the MG is initially available with battery sizes of 51 or 64 kWh for ranges of 350 or 450km.

The version with the stronger battery is combined with a 150 kW/204 hp electric motor on the rear axle. For the weaker one, MG has chosen a motor with 130 kW/170 hp. The pricier model is supposed to accelerate from a standstill to 100kph in less than 8 seconds and reach a top speed of 160kph.

MG has not yet named prices, but the speculation is that the MG4 won't break the bank. If the manufacturer can pass on their production savings to buyers in Europe to remain competitive, the MG4 should start at not much more than €30,000 (RM137,000).
