FRANKFURT: Volkswagen is conjuring up the spectre of the Golf GTI for the electric age, and is considering pimping the ID.3 with some silent muscle, in what the company is marketing as a Generation E Golf.

To give us a sense of what this might look like, VW brand manager Ralf Brandstaetter has unveiled a concept bearing the ID.X badge and promises that parts of this concept will make it into series production.

The developers have swapped the original 62kWh battery from the ID.3 for the 82kWh storage unit from the ID.4 and at the same time revised the electric motors and chassis.

According to Brandstaetter, the result is a 333-horsepower all-wheel drive car that weighs 200 kilos less than the standard model and is correspondingly quicker on the road. It needs just 5.3 seconds for the sprint from 0 to 100kph, for example.

Because the traction and stability control system has been supplemented by a special drift mode, the VW boss also promises much more fun at the wheel for anyone testing it out on a racetrack.

In addition to the technical changes, VW has also modified the design, fitted a poison yellow trim and sports seats.
