Want a safer electric scooter experience? Opt for a three-wheeler

PARIS: As with moto scooters, three wheels on a stand-up scooter allow for a safer ride than two. With two wheels at the back, stability is optimized and the risk of falling is reduced.

Several manufacturers have recently announced new models of this type, a trend that could win over a host of new users, who may still be afraid of getting hurt on a traditional electric stand-up scooter.

Italian builder Askoll, a major player in the car-sharing field in Europe, has introduced its first three-wheel electric scooter, the Scoo3.

Its most notable design feature is its two wheels at the back, but its tilting footrest system and its disc brakes are also designed to optimise the user's stability in all circumstances and therefore limit the risk of falling.

As for the rest, it is a classic stand-up scooter with an electric motor of 350 W and a range of 50km. It is able to reach its maximum speed of 25kph in eight seconds. Recharging its battery completely takes about four hours. This new model will likely be initially reserved for operators of self-service scooter programs.

Earlier this summer, Honda presented an original three-wheeled scooter, called Striemo, whose mechanism also ensures balance and a stable ride in all situations. It will be available in Japan by the end of the year and is set to arrive in Europe in 2023.
