PETALING JAYA: It's a no-brainer that the BMW Z4 and Toyota Supra are going to be pitted against each other sooner or latter.

In this case, it was sooner. CarWow's Mat Watson lined up the two cars on a British airstrip and off they went, with Mat and the other driver putting pedal to the metal.

Which car won the drag race? Find out in the video below.

BMW and Toyota began co-developing their respective roadsters in 2013 to share costs and shorten time to market.

The Supra mechanicals are based off the Z4 and in many ways they are similar inside out. Both are rear-wheel driven and use BMW engines and even share the same ZF 8-speed automatic transmission. The Supra and Z4 use the in-line six cylinder engine and 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engines in their base variants.

While the Supra is a hardtop roadster, the Z4 is only produced with a retractable softtop. However, the German car is the heavier car, being 40kg heavier than its Japanese counterpart.

The embedded video from CarWow shows the 6-cylinder versions of each car racing against each other.

Officially, BMW's straight-six engine makes 335hp and 500Nm of torque at the crank. Proving that the new Supra is tuner-friendly, another auto site Car Throttle has had the Supra engine dyno-ed and showed it could deliver over 376hp and 556Nm at the wheels. Compare those numbers to the US-specced Z4 which was dyno-ed at 339hp/579Nm at the wheels.
