MUNICH: BMW's performance division will have its hands full for 2021.

And yes, it has been confirmed that M would be introducing an electrically powered performance car for the first time this year on top of an "extraordinary diversity" in its line-up.

The M5 CS would make its world debut this month. It would be followed by a special edition M5 with outstanding performance and exclusive motorsport characteristics. After that, the main focus would be on the market launch of the new M3 Sedan starting in March and the new BMW M4 Coupe.

Each variant with classic manual shift would be complemented by a Competition model featuring an 8-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic.

In the summer, the four-wheel drive system M xDrive would be added for the first time to the drive portfolio for the M3 and the M4. And the M4 Convertible would arrive in time for the warm season.

On the first M3 Touring model, BMW said it is still undergoing series development.

BMW M would be celebrating 50 years in 2022, and the year would be marked by special edition models.

Sales of M cars grew by 6% to 144,218 units in 2020 led by the M3 and M4 models. The X5 M, X6 M and special edition M2 CS also contributed to sales.

“The fact that we were able to conclude this exceptionally challenging year (2020) with yet a further record is great validation of our consistent growth strategy,” said BMW M chairman Markus Flasch.

“We can be particularly proud of the fact that we were able not only to defend our market dominance as the most successful provider of performance and high-performances automobiles, but also to have even expanded it.”
