PETALING JAYA: Dr Wong Shaw Voon has been appointed as the new chairman of the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (Miros) effective today.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong congratulated Wong and welcomed him to the post on a Facebook post.

"I’m confident that Wong’s vast experience in road safety issues will serve Miros well for the good of the community and country.

"Wong is no stranger to the transportation and engineering industry of Malaysia as the former director-general and board member of Miros.

"He had also served in the ministry's Special Investigation Committee that investigated and produced the report on the LRT collision in May last year," Dr Wee said.

Dr Wee added that Wong is a Fellow of the Asean Academy of Engineering & Technology and a consultant to the United Nations on the UN Road Safety Fund.

Wong holds first-class honours in Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical and System Engineering and was the first in his class at Universiti Putra Malaysia.

Subsequently, Wong earned his PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Dublin City University in Ireland.

Dr Wee also expressed his gratitude on behalf of the government towards outgoing chairman Datuk Suret Singh, who had helmed Miros since Feb 2019.
