Wrong steering component fitted to new Mercedes S-Class sparks recall, up to 1,400 units affected

STUTTGART: It's scary news that Mercedes-Benz can do without but the serious defect affecting a small number of the latest S-Class flagship was revealed in a report by Business Insider earlier this month.

Daimler is recalling up to 1,400 units of the 2021 model over flaws in the inner tie rods that could lead to dangerous steering issues.

Early buyers of the affected S-Class units have been urged to head to their local dealerships immediately for an inspection of the tie rods and replace them for free if necessary.

Business Insider cited a Daimler spokesman as saying that the affected cars might have been supplied with inner tie rods not meant for the model. This could then lead to a situation where the connection to the steering rack might not “permanently withstand the stress of driving.”

The component is said to be shipped by the supplier pre-assembled as a complete unit and installed at Mercedes's Factory 56 plant in Sindelfingen, Germany.

The W223 S-Class made its world premiere in September 2020.
