Focused – this was Mazda’s approach when the Japanese carmaker developed its latest fourth generation low-slung, fun-to-drive, two-seater roadster that’s known as the MX-5.

With an estimated price of RM220,000, the new MX-5 gets the “Kodo - Soul of Motion” styling and a slew of efficient SkyActiv technologies.

The more potent and fuel-efficient 2.0-litre direct-injection engine produces 155bhp at 6,000rpm and 200Nm of torque at 4,600rpm.

The two-seater roadster now weighs about 100kg less at 1,000kg, while having a wheelbase of 2,315mm - 105mm-shorter than its predecessor, and comes in measuring 3,915mm-long, 1,730mm-wide and 1,235mm tall.

Transmission could either be an automatic or manual six-speed type.

With power sent to the rear, the MX-5 could be wearing a set of 17-inch aluminium alloy wheels with 205/45 series tyres for grip, while the four partially hidden 11-inch discs take charge of braking.

The MX-5’s counterpart in America gets a nine-speaker BOSE sound system that includes passenger headrest speakers, Audiopilot, AUX input, two USB ports, Bluetooth connectivity, speed sensing automatic volume control, voice command and a seven-inch full-colour touchscreen display with a multi-function commander control.

The front bucket seats should retain its powered adjustability – six-ways for the driver and four for the passenger, while the list of conveniences ought to include keyless entry with push-start button as well as automatic headlights and wipers to name a few.

The list of safety equipment should include six airbags, anti-lock braking system, traction control, blind spot sensor, rear collision warning, lane departure warning and low tyre pressure warning.
