Mercedes-AMG GT4 heads to Nürburgring

By JAY WONG | 18 August 2017

NÜRBURGRING: The new Mercedes-AMG GT4 will complete its first racing laps of the Nürburgring-Nordschleife (18/19 August), which will see two AMG GT4 on the grid.

The 198,850 Euros (RM1.0mil) race car will be run by two test teams - Uwe Alzen Automotive and Black Falcon for development runs in race conditions.

The latest Mercedes-AMG Motorsport family member in the GT segment is to get its final fine-tuning through the experience from the teams and additional racing mileage at the demanding infamous race track.

Further testing mileage will be added to the programme of the race car, which includes, among others, a 30-hour endurance test at the Lausitzring.

The test races in selected Veranstaltergemeinschaft Langstreckenpokal Nürburgring (VLN) rounds is to acquire further insights to help the final fine-tuning prior to delivery of the vehicle to the first customer racing teams at the end of the year.

The VLN is an organisation of motorsport clubs where each hosts one event of a ten-race series held on the Nürburgring Nordschleife.

During the fifth round of the VLN, the teams will be competing in the SPX (admission upon special application only) class as the car has yet to be rated for the GT4 category.

The focus isn’t on the sporting achievements, but rather on collecting further relevant data in racing conditions.

Uwe Alzen himself will be controlling the test race from the pit wall while Fabian Hamprecht, Mercedes-AMG test and development driver Thomas Jäger and Mike Stursberg - an all-German driver line-up, will be alternating behind the wheel.

The Black Falcon team has also entered a trio of German drivers of Stefan Karg, Fidel Leib, Mercedes-AMG test and development driver Jan Seyffarth and Spaniard Alexander Toril for the six-hour race.

The race car is based on the Mercedes-AMG GT R previously introduced in June, 2016 and has had its road-going parts replaced to make it race-ready to help it earn the GT4 nomenclature.

“We are not only collecting further technical insights, but also feedback from the various drivers which we can still incorporate into the car. Before we can deliver the first Mercedes-AMG GT4, we will carry out some more of these tests in racing conditions. Not only at the Nordschleife, but also internationally and with various teams,” said Mercedes-AMG Customer Racing head Stefan Wendl.
