Better road tax mechanism in the works, says Loke

KUALA LUMPUR: A more efficient and convenient road tax acquisition mechanism will be introduced after Chinese New Year, with details to be announced soon, says Anthony Loke.

The Transport Minister said the Federation of Motor and Credit Companies Associations of Malaysia (FMCCAM) had requested for a 30-day grace period for second-hand vehicles to be driven on roads upon completing the ownership transfer process pending the collection of new road tax discs from the Road Transport Department (JPJ).

"I will pick a date after Chinese New Year to talk about the new mechanism.

"I know that road tax-related problems have caused much inconvenience (to the people). We can digitalise and simplify the process," he told the audience at the 55th anniversary dinner of Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Car Dealers and Credit Companies Association last night.

Loke noted that digitalisation could provide a smoother and faster service to the people.

"With digitalisation, the public does not need to go to JPJ offices to pay for or collect road tax discs," he said, according to China Press.

Loke said he hoped that associations could use memorandums to submit their views and suggestions on ways to transform transport-related issues to his ministry.

He said many organisations were keen to have dialogues with him but he might not have the time to attend to all as the ministry covers land, air and sea travel, involving numerous groups.

He also said each memorandum received is assigned to the relevant department to determine its feasibility.

Loke also witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between CarSifu, FMCCAM and ezAuto Asia Sdn Bhd during the anniversary celebration. The MoU will see all parties coming together to jointly explore collaborative efforts to enhance consumer experience in purchasing pre-owned cars.
