Chery unveils its Chery Super Hybrid powertrain

KUALA LUMPUR: Chery Malaysia, the official distributor of the brand in the country, introduced its Chery Super Hybrid (CSH) powertrain to give Malaysians an idea of what is to come.

The powertrain will be carried in the Tiggo 7 CSH and Tiggo 8 CSH, turning these sports utility vehicles (SUVs) into a plugin hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) and should carry the Plug-in Hybrid badge.

Although the recently-launched Tiggo Cross carries the CSH moniker, it is not a PHEV.

The Tiggo 7 CSH and Tiggo 8 CSH were previewed ahead of their respective launch date(s) which will be held before year-end.

The CSH powertrain for the incoming SUVs will feature a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine with 44.5% thermal efficiency, while producing 143PS and 215Nm of torque.

This is supplemented by a 204PS/310Nm electric motor mated to a stepless dedicated hybrid transmission (DHT150) that touts 98.5% mechanical efficiency.

This brings its combined systems output to 347PS and 525Nm - allowing for an all-electric propulsion of up to 90km and up to 1,200km while in hybrid mode.

The electric motor draws power from an 18.3kWh lithium iron-phosphate (LFP) battery, which can accept both an AC and a faster DC charger.

The latter is able to bring the battery's state-of-charge from 30% to 80% in 20 minutes.

The battery is able to accept a 6.6kW AC charger that will bring its State-of-Charge (SoC) from 30% to 80% in three hours, while a faster 40kW charger does the same deed in 19 minutes.

A three-pin home charger will take 8.5 hours to bring its SoC from 10% to 100%.

Furthermore, the battery comes with an IP68 certification that prevents the incursion of dust and water, while also allowing it to withstand an extreme temperature of up to 95 degrees Celsius.

The certification is an international standard that indicates how well a device is protected against the intrusion of solids such as dust and liquids.

The “IP” stands for Ingress Protection, while “6” refers to the highest level of protection where no dust is able to enter.

The second digit, “8”, refers to the protection level against liquids for 30 minutes or more with a continuous immersion beyond one meter, depending on design.

The CSH's battery recently underwent a seawater incursion test in Indonesia, which saw it submerged for more than 53 hours and was part of the Chinese carmaker's Global Safety Challenge involving other countries, including China.

The battery was reinstalled into a Tiggo 8 CSH and was driven without issues and was part of the Chinese carmaker's Global Safety Challenge that involves several countries, including China, which saw a Tiggo 9 PHEV underwent a battery of extreme tests.

The tests included a spiral rollover, head-on collision, a seven-vehicle stacking test, a 55kph side-impact, a 4.9m vertical drop, and finally 720 hours of salt-spray exposure.

Next, the Global Safety Challenge will head to Mexico, where a Tiggo 7 PHEV CSH will face an underbody scraping test across the country’s rugged highland terrain.

The trials will assess the battery’s undercarriage protection and system stability at high altitudes as a key challenge in mountainous and rural driving conditions before moving on to other key markets such as South Africa and Brazil.

“With the Chery Super Hybrid platform, we aim to provide Malaysian drivers with the flexibility of electric driving, the range confidence of a hybrid, and the performance of a Chery,” said Chery Malaysia vice-president Michael Chew.
