Geely SX11 crossover: A future Proton compact SUV?

By THOMAS HUONG | 30 July 2018

SHANGHAI: Geely Auto is developing a new crossover SUV code-named SX11 and a compact sedan, the Bin Rui, using its new B-segment Modular Architecture (BMA) for small and compact vehicles.

It is quite possible that these two compact cars might be re-skinned as Proton vehicles in the future, as the Geely Group has a 49.9 per cent stake in national automaker Proton Holdings Bhd.

BMA is an entirely new global modular architecture independently developed by Geely Auto, which greatly shortens the vehicle development cycle and improves product quality.

The BMA will be used to develop B-segment vehicles and will cover SUVs, sedans, crossovers, wagons, and MPVs.

BMA based models can be developed with a wheelbase as short as 2,550mm (similar to Proton Persona) or as long as 2,700mm (similar to 2018 Honda Civic).

Multiple powertrain options can be used with BMA, including Geely’s 1.0-litre and 1.5-litre turbocharged direct injection engines, 1.4-litre turbocharge engine, and hybrid powertrains such as Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV), Hybrid Electric (HEV) and Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle (MHEV).

The new SX11 SUV Crossover will be officially unveiled later this year and will utilise a 1.5 turbocharged direct injection engine jointly developed by Geely Auto and Volvo Cars.

In a recent benchmarking test, the SX11 achieved an average acceleration rate of 7.9 seconds from 0-100kph, faster than many of its rivals, including those from luxury brands.

The jointly developed 1.5TD engine utilized in the SX11 benchmark test uses a low-inertia turbo and in-cylinder direct injection combustion system.

Maximum power can reach 174hp and maximum torque is 255Nm.

Both the Bin Rui sedan and the SX11 Crossover will be formally launched in the third and fourth quarters of 2018.
